Apostle Island Report

Wow…..what a great turnout, and a great race. They continue to put on a first class event! The weather looked scarry when we started, but, except for a very short drizzle, the race was dry. It was pretty chilly on the ferry, but was just fine while we skated.
We had a terrific dinner Friday night with 37 attendees. A couple of Flying Fossils joined us for an evening of story telling, sharing, and good eats. We welcomed our newest member from Wisconsin, Brian Fussel, as well as having our 14 year old, Tyson Jenkins there to meet some of his new team members. It was great to have a nice, well mannered, enthusiastic, young man there to share the evening with. Lord knows we need to get some younger Team Rainbo members involved, and Tyson is a credit to our team. We also honored one of our long term members, Jan Kopis, who has represented Team Rainbo and skating in general, for many, many years. He has had to retire from skating for health reasons, but there he was (with the secret to his success…..his wife Lois), coming to the event just to cheer us all on……….now that is class……..we love you Jan (and Lois)…
A special shout out to Steveo Meissinger……although he was late to the start line, he arrived a couple of seconds after the race started, he was able to catch up and take 3rd place overall in the Pro advanced category…..no warm up, starting at the back of the pack, he really showed his pro quality abilities. It was quite a good field, with many of the top US pros skating, but Steveo out maneuvered and out sprinted most of them for a great finish…..way to go Stevo. Larry Kaufman was also in the final pro pack, and has shown that some winter, ice speed skating training can definitely improve your inline abilities. Front pack all the way………..GO TEAM RAINBO. Below are all the skaters who made the trip, and skated the race. As usual, Team Rainbo represented the entire skating community better than any other team there. Thank you all for participating, and hope to see many of you at other races this year. There are no words for how proud I am of what our team represents, and the respect and admiration that we have in the world of inline racing…..thank you all…….Cale
